Re-enactment
Re-enactment is best explained as living history. This type of historical research reached the Netherlands through England, after it had begun in the United States. Re-enactors depict an accurate historical image for both audience and participants. They give the audience an impression of how armies operated and soldiers and civilians lived. Many re-enactors become specialists in the era they depict. Some even gain so much knowledge about this, that many museums can learn a lot from these people. In the Netherlands re-enacting groups were founded, too . Nowadays they range from Romans to Second World War. The unions associated in NAN are engaged in the Napoleontic era. This includes The Batavian Republic, The Kingdom of Holland, the French Empire under Napoleon I and the Kingdom of the Netherlands under William I. This period ranges from 1795 until 1815. The geographical area covered by NAN is the Netherlands from 1815: this is more or less todays Netherlands and Belgium.
Members of the unions are historically accurate clothed and equiped, Apart from that a re-enactor goes to war historically accurate. Camps, accessoires, food: everything has to meet the highest historical standards. To gain knowledge of the period mentioned and to depict everything as historically correct as possible, many members are engaged in historical research. The results of this research are used during the many events that take place. NAN also organises exercision days every last sunday of the month, during winter.
